Here's Dana and Junie with a few writing/life tips!

Greetings from Mentink Manor! Hello there! I am author Dana Mentink and I’ve written forty or so books. The most current is Cold Case Pursuit which features a dashing police canine. We’ve got a real canine here too, but, er...well, maybe not quite so dashing. Junie, let us just say, is eleven pounds of trouble in a fur coat, but she’s taught me a lot. I thought I’d share her top tips for writing and life!

Writing Rule #1: Take a movement break!
The first thing Junie taught me was that the view is always the same inside. No matter about the virus, the choking smoke here in California or sizzling heat, she is on fire to go out into the world and sniff and wag at anything and everything. "Let's go OOOUUUUUTTTTTT," you can practically hear her say. "We're too young to sit in a chair all day." You would be amazed at how many times I’ve gotten stuck in my writing only to have the answer present itself to me during a nice little outside stroll. Good advice, Junie. Let's take a break here in Chapter Three and go out for a walk. Now where is my mask?

Writing Rule #2: Let it rest!
If a thing is worth something, you can come back to it later. That bone she hid under the sofa? It's gonna be even more amazing when she rediscovers it later this evening. Writing is like that, too. When you finish a draft, it's better if you let it sit and revisit it later with a fresh eye. Then you can dig deep, reexamine your work and make changes you never would have thought to make while the ink was still fresh. Since we are sheltering in place here, I’ve got more time to indulge in such luxuries from the safety of my own back yard!

Writing Rule #3: Dogs are imperfect, just like people.
Junie is a comfort dog...but she’s entirely devoted to her own comfort. If I was being abducted, I am not totally convinced she would come to my rescue. As a matter of fact, she might just go hide under the bed until the coast was clear! She has a cowardly streak, truth be told. You know what? So do people. They’ve got all kinds of fears and failures too, so we writers have to make sure our characters are full of those pesky flaws. That’s what makes fiction compelling!

So I will sign off now since it’s time to take Her Highness for her evening stroll. I hope that you all are having a safe October and finding lots of wonderful fiction to delight you!
