The House on Foster Hill by Jaime Jo Wright
Need a story to get lost in? Look no further. From the early 1900s to present day, Foster Hill House is a romance, a mystery, a joining of two times in history.
Ivy Thorpe finds a body hidden in a tree. A mystery unfolds, drawing her into danger and a murder. Who was the girl and what happened?
Kaine Prescott is running away from her past, a husband who had been murdered, and she charged as a crazy person for not believing his death was an accident.
With enough similarities in both girls’ lives, Foster Hill House will keep you reading to find out what happened in this moment in time where history intersects. A note in a book-All houses hold secrets, and I am one of them- draws Ivy and Kaine into searching for the dead girl’s identity, and psychological games will keep you turning the pages into the night.
Jaime Jo Wright’s The House on Foster Hill is a must read suspense. The cover is excellent and draws you right into the story.

His Steadfast Love by Julie Lessman
Looking for a love story that delivers faith, hope, healing, and romance? His Steadfast Love has it all. Chase is a pastor running from love. His heart was broken and he’s not taking another chance on love. He’s determined to show Cat God’s love but when his heart gets involved, can he keep his distance or will his time with Cat heal his heart?
Cat is fun, flirty, and running from God. When Pastor Chase takes an interest in her, she doesn’t understand when her actions cause him to turn away. Can she prove to Chase she does love him?
The real-life events Chase and Cat go through reveal our weaknesses, our distrust, but also display God’s love toward us, his faithfulness.
I love reading books that teach me about God’s love, his faithfulness. His Steadfast Love gives me hope that God’s love is a “love that we can count on because it never ceases, it never fails, and it abounds in mercies that never come to an end.” God’s love is the greatest love story ever told. His Steadfast Love is about hope, healing, and forgiveness. His Steadfast Love is the third book in a series but you do not need to read the books in order.
Love prospers when a fault is forgiven. Proverbs 17:9

Descriptions and Prescriptions by Michael R Emlet
Descriptions and Prescriptions is a short book building a biblical framework to understand psychiatric diagnoses and the use of psychoactive medications using scripture as the groundwork to build upon. The book is set up with two parts. In Part 1, the author presents a balanced assessment of psychiatric diagnosis. In Part 2, he uses case studies for illustration.
The book lists several concerns with the psychiatric diagnostic system. One being: …some psychiatric diagnoses “medicalize” sinful behavior. Is it medical or is it sin?
There is a chapter on Implications for Ministry, directed to pastoral care and counsel. Michael Emlet brings a strong case for not everyone who suffers from psychiatric diagnoses needs medicine. Sometimes they just need a friend, or as in the case of ADHD and French kids not being diagnosed with that as much, a differing viewpoint as to what is acceptable. He emphasizes that a diagnoses is a starting point not an ending point.
In Part 2, first he notes that pastors, counselors, and other helpers must be familiar with the psychoactive medications. Then he states that the goals of this section are to: familiarize you with the basic classes of psychoactive medications, review what we know about the mechanism of action and efficacy of such drugs with a particular focus on antidepressants, and discuss a biblical approach to psychoactive medications. This part of the book breaks down the medications, how they work, how effective they are. This section uses scripture to show hazards to spiritual growth.
I like how the author didn’t push one way or the other about not taking any medications or staying on medications. He understood how to study each case before him and take other things into account. If you enjoy reading about the psychiatric diagnostic system and how it pertains to scripture and what God has to say about man, this is the book for you. It’s short enough you can read it in one day, but goes into enough detail to tell you what the author is thinking and show you how he would deal with a few example cases.

A Powerful Voice by Penelope Powell
Gloria has a past to hide. Justin doesn’t want to share his past. He’s the new worship leader. She’s still trying to figure out her Christian walk. She’s from the South. He’s a Northerner. They are so different, but, something is pulling them together. Will they find forgiveness in their pain?
This is a great story by Penelope Powell, full of God’s grace and love in our Christian walk. We make mistakes, we falter and fail, but God doesn’t leave us or forsake us. If you need encouragement to find God’s love, this is the book for you. Gloria and Justin could be you, me, any of us on our walk with God. I was able to relate to them as characters and in the things they went through. A Powerful Voice drew me closer in my walk with God, gave me encouragement, and increased my faith. Forgive yourself and find who you are in God.

Hidden Women The African-American Mathematicians of NASAWho Helped Win the Space Race by Rebecca Rissman
This book is a narrative nonfiction. It’s written in an easy to understand style regarding the African-American mathematicians at NASA during the Space Race of the 1960s and 1970s. They were the best mathematicians around, but segregation and racial tensions flourished during this time. This book acknowledges some of the daily and work-related struggles they faced and how they overcame them. One theme that stuck out over the course of this book: you can do anything you set your heart on, you just might have to work harder at it.
One of the mathematicians grew up in West Virginia. If you’re interested in the space program, and the events that took place during this time period, you would enjoy this book. Pictures are included of the women this book speaks about, as well of some of the astronauts of this time frame and the equipment used. It also talks about the failures and accomplishments experienced by the space program. At the end of the book is a read more section, if you want other books on the same topic, and critical thinking questions at the end, as well as a glossary.
The information is portrayed in such a way young teens through adults would enjoy this book, learning more about the space program, as well as some of the key players during this time. I would highly recommend Hidden Women.

The Highland Ruby by Brenda B Taylor
Marry for love or marry for family? Flora is torn between the two. Gavin is back from the New World, but is told he has to leave again. How can he win back Flora’s love if he’s gone all the time? Their faith in God and each other is tested as they are separated and must overcome difficult circumstances. When Gavin is forced to leave again, how can he prove to his brother, and to Flora, that he is home to stay?
I could feel Flora’s despair at Gavin’s leaving. Would he return? From a fight with a wildcat to evading a warrant for his arrest, Gavin’s plight made for an action filled story. Brenda Taylor subtly adds in historical facts and the Scottish era. As events kept turning against Gavin coming home, I couldn’t put the book down. If you enjoy historical romance, you’ll love this 16th century Scottish romance. This is Gavin’s story, from A Highland Pearl. These are stand-alone stories in the Highland Treasures series. At the end of the story is a glossary of Gaelic and other terms used in the story.
I am looking forward to the next story in the series.

The Silvershell Beach Inn by Christina Lorenzen
It’s been 12 years since Jacy has been to visit her grandmother. Her first afternoon back, she runs into Zach. Will they rekindle the romance they had as teenagers? Zach’s willing to accept the challenge. But will his family’s ownership of her grandmother’s house pull them apart?
I enjoyed this sweet romance by Christian Lorenzen. They’ve got an old friendship, but they are different people now. Can they forge that gap? Or will Zach listen to his mother again who made it clear Jacy was not the girl for him?
The descriptions of the beach made me feel like I was right there on the beach. I enjoyed Zach and Jacy’s characters. If you enjoy a sweet summer beach read, this story is for you.

Too Far Down by Mary Connealy
Too Far Down is the third book in The Cimarron Legacy series. It starts off with an explosion and doesn’t let up. If you enjoy inspirational westerns, you’ll love this story. Mary Connealy’s blend of faith, humor, and romance will draw you into her cowboy stories.
Cole Boden has been to Harvard, but his father’s last will and testament states he must live at the ranch for a full year or forfeit it. He’s now running his family’s mine operation. Until trouble finds his family again. Someone aims to take control of their vast land grant near the Cimarron River. With these explosions he wants to stay in one of the cabins at the mine, but can’t since that’s not on the ranch.
Melanie Blake, a close family friend and in line to inherit her father’s ranch, volunteers to stay in one of the cabins at the mine. Can he let her do that? Will she be safe? What if she’s put in harm’s way when his family is attacked again?
Cole has to come to terms with living back east or staying in the west. What will he decide? If he decides back east, Mel won’t go back with him. She loves ranching. While trying to figure out who is targeting his family, will he figure out where his heart wants to be?
Too Far Down is full of romantic comedy, suspense, and the pull of legacy, love, and family. If you haven’t read the other books in the series, this story can be read as a stand-alone. But you’ll want to read the others to see what’s happened.
I love the cover for this story as it is a mix of what happens in the story. The characters drew me into the story. Their imperfections and Cole’s attitude of not being quite sure what God would have him do made them realistic. Her descriptions of the mining accident and the landscape made me feel like I was right there.

Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan
Kate Sullivan is lead counsel on a case against a big pharmaceutical company. As the trial date gets closer, attacks against Kate escalate. Landon James becomes Kate’s bodyguard. Can he keep her alive to try the case?
Landon is a former Army Ranger and hasn’t had much faith in God since. This theme was prevalent throughout the story. As Landon confronted events from his past and talked with Kate and his partners about their faith and how it impacted them, I found my faith encouraged.
I enjoyed reading this legal thriller by Rachel Dylan. Missing paper documents, deleted files that IT staff couldn’t find, a college friendship put to the test as they are on opposing sides, all made Deadly Proof an exciting read. How far will the pharmaceutical company go to keep its name in the clear?

Finding Love in Friday Harbor, Washington by Annette Irby Washington Island Romance Book 1
Professor Mikaela Rhoades puts a plan in place to save her ex-boyfriend’s charter company. But he doesn’t know it’s her doing it. When he finds out, he’s less than enthused. She left him all those 12 years ago. Why is she back now?
Hunter Cahill has never gotten over Miki leaving him to pursue her education. He wasn’t leaving and she wanted to broaden her horizons, all the way to Hawaii. His dad made him promise he’d give her another chance if she came back. Well, now here she was. Could he keep his promise to his dad?
The theme of trusting God runs through this book. Hunter has stopped praying, since his dad’s death and Miki leaving. This quote from the story says it all: “But he couldn’t ‘turn to God’ right now. Wouldn’t-didn’t-couldn’t-trust Him.”
I was so excited to see Annette Irby had another book out. And it’s the beginning of a series. It was interesting to read about a marine biologist putting a program into place to save a charter boat company. This story was fun to read, I loved the characters, and got to see some fascinating sea creatures, like harbor porpoise. Miki and Hunter’s path to trust in each other and in God kept me reading the story. Can’t wait to read more stories in this series.

Justice Buried by Patricia Bradley
Kelsey is out to redeem her family name and secure a job in her chosen profession, security. Someone’s killed her boss, she can’t find her calling card, and who really knows what she was hired to do? Will she be accused of the murder?
Brad protects Kelsey as they determine who is out to kill her. What does she know that the killer doesn't want known?
Justice Buried is part of the Memphis Cold Case series. You can read this series in any order. They can be read as a stand alone. This story was well-researched, as Kelsey is an advanced level climber and there are several scenes where she climbs. As Kelsey is hired to check a building’s security, I could follow along with what she was doing. The story was not bogged down with technical jargon that I couldn't understand.
If you enjoy inspirational romantic suspense, you'll love Justice Buried. This is the first story of Patricia Bradley's I've read, but it won't be the last. The suspense kept building. The romantic elements didn't detract from the story. There were enough twists and turns I couldn't figure out who did it, but not so many I got confused. Justice Buried-a must-read inspirational suspense.

If you love inspirational romances, you will love this story. I enjoyed the story being set in a vet clinic and the dialogue regarding Christianity verses religion. A light-hearted story that displays the difference.

Gift of the Magpie by Zoe McCarthy
I loved this story by Zoe McCarthy! The characters’ dialogue zipped back and forth. It was fun and flirty with a message of faith and love. Cam has moved back to town and doesn’t recognize Amanda from high school. But she recognizes him. Right down to how her heart felt when he left.
Can they get past what happened in high school and find love now? From making a snowman, to building an igloo, to spending Christmas together, Gift of the Magpie is a must read. The characters are engaging, and the theme of faith and trust drew me into the story. Do we trust God to handle the hard situations? Can we offer forgiveness as Jesus did?
Gift of the Magpie - made me stop and think about my trust and faith in God, and how I need to forgive others as Jesus forgave me. As Amanda learned to let things go from her past to move forward in her present, it showed me ways I could do the same.

Hello Again by Brenda Novak (Dr. Evelyn Talbot Novels)
If you love a great psychological suspense, you'll love Brenda Novak's Hello Again. From the start, you won't be able to put this book down. Dr. Evelyn Talbot is still being targeted by Jasper Moore, her attacker. She started Hanover House to study inmate psychopaths and their "consciencelessness". She is getting to know Dr. Lyman Bishop, an inmate convicted of killing. He states he's innocent. When Evelyn discovers his mentally handicapped sister that he's been taking care of, she begins to wonder if he is innocent. Will this put her safety in jeopardy?
Jasper killed three of her best friends from high school, and kidnapped and tortured her before, but she got away. He is after her with a vengeance again. Can Eveylyn's boyfriend Amarok, a police officer, discover where he is and protect her when he comes calling? Will Jasper succeed this time?
The suspense of Evelyn discovering Jasper's been killing again, Jasper getting close to harm Evelyn again, discovering if Dr. Lyman Bishop is innocent or not, and Evelyn staying alive one step in front of Jasper, makes for a page turning suspense. Hello Again will keep you up till the wee hours of the morning to finish this story.
Hello Again refers to the torture the women kidnapped endure, but doesn't go into too much detail. There is some language. The story is told in past tense, with developed characters, and an engaging story line. The twists and turns and unexpected ending makes for a great read.
Hello Again is part of the Dr. Evelyn Talbot novel series. You don't have to read these in order to know what is going on, but the heroine, Evelyn Talbot has a history with an attacker and this story is a continuation. You can read Her Darkest Nightmare and Hanover House to get the backstory, but it is not needed to enjoy this story.

Plain Retribution by Dana R Lynn
Loved this Amish suspense by Dana R Lynn! What do you do when someone has targeted you and you're deaf? The only person you can rely on is police officer Miles Olsen to keep you safe, who is the only person in town you can communicate with. But can he protect the woman he's falling for, or will his past mistakes cause him to slip up and get her hurt? Everything he knows and loves is on the line until he can secure Rebecca's safety. When Rebecca is kidnapped again, will she survive long enough for Miles to save her?
I enjoyed this story's look at deafness and communication. Miles grew up signing and speaking in ASL (American Sign Language). Rebecca is working toward a Certified Deaf Interpreter certificate. Dana's depiction of Rebecca's deafness increased my awareness of some of the things she encountered in her daily life.

Ubaldo lives in El Salvador. He is a teacher and translator living generational poverty. When he's asked to translate for Brooke's mission group, he prays they are impacted by what's around them. He is protective of his people and doesn't want them hurt.
Brooke is a rising news anchor. Will she be blinded by the advancement of her career, or the eyes of the orphans she meets on a mission trip to El Salvador? How does she know she's hearing God in her situation?
Ubaldo translates for the missionary team. Will they be impacted by the poverty around them, or only whisper empty promises from their place of contentment? Brooke wants this trip over with so she can get back to her aspirations of being an on-camera news anchor. But will this trip be just the break she needs?
The orphans, especially Fatima and her sister, Ubaldo, and Brooke, stole my heart. I felt like I was in El Salvador on this mission trip. Sometimes there are no answers to why God allows things to happen, but resting in His love brings hope and healing.

Rapunzel's Lighthouse by Christina Lorenzen
A contemporary retelling of Rapunzel. I loved this story of a girl not sure what her future holds and a guy who is searching for his present.
Georgie grew up taking care of Salt Cliff's lighthouse, which has now fallen into disrepair. She is allowed to stay in the adjacent cottage until it's decided what will become of it. Where will she go then?
Colby is injured which causes him to retire from the Navy before he planned. He wants to open a sailing school, and the lighthouse would be the perfect location. Will he bid on the lighthouse and force Georgie to leave the only home she's known?
Georgie opens her heart to Colby, until she reads a letter in his possession. He plans to attend the auction of her lighthouse. She doesn't want to move, but she doesn't have the funds to purchase it. How could he buy it out from under her?
Rapunzel's Lighthouse is a fun read. With her long hair, and Colby's determination, I couldn't put this book down until I'd read to the end to see what would become of Rapunzel's lighthouse.

Can Maide and Andrew bring peace to their clans before it's too late?

Sunshine Book 9 by Joy Ohagwu
Sunshine is a delightful end to this series. I am sad to say goodbye to the characters I’ve come to know as family and friends but this book is a perfect conclusion. If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, I suggest starting at Book 1 and working your way through. You’ll be glad you did. Each one is filled with suspense, intrigue, romance. If you love inspirational suspense, you’ll love this series.
Sunshine is just as good as Book 1. Through the books in the series, watching Ritz grow up, seeing how God led Robert Towers, his wife, Pete, and the others, my faith has been strengthened as my enjoyment of inspirational suspense has been filled.

Contagion (Dark Days Book 1) by Marcy Dyer
Once you start this book, you won’t be able to put it down, unless it’s to slow your heart rate or cover your eyes. Love zombie apocalypse stories? You’ll love this one. The action doesn’t stop.

Deep Waters by Jessica Patch
Shep’s mission is to keep Caley safe, from a killer and from himself. Who killed Caley’s intern? What are they hiding? As Caley and Shep untangle what’s going on, their feelings for each other get stronger. But Shep can’t let that happen. With his past, Caley would never be able to trust him.
A marine turned security specialist with a past of leaving people before they could leave him, Shep can’t be distracted by Caley. He’s there to protect her. Nothing more. But as they delve deeper into exotic animal trade, will he be the only one who can rescue her?
Shep’s spiritual journey pulled me into this story. God as Father. Shep’s never known one. Bounced from foster family to foster family, he’s never felt love, or acceptance. Shep’s discovery will encourage your own walk with God. My favorite quote from this story says it all. “It’s in the deep waters you really learn to trust God.” If you enjoy Christian suspense and romance, you will love Deep Waters.

Deadly Memories by Mary Alford
Inspirational suspense at its best. Lena has been in captivity for 7 years. She is coerced into following orders. Without her memory and the child she lost, she has no other choice. But when she is rescued by Kyle, the man she’s supposed to kill, what does she do when memories from the past override her plans for the present? Is she really who her captors say she is?
Deadly Memories is a fast-paced suspense that will keep you turning the pages. When you’ve gone as far as you can on your own, God is there. When you can’t trust anyone, you can trust God. When you don’t understand why things happen, God can give you peace. I really enjoyed Kyle’s journey as he overcame what had happened in his past and was stronger for it. He didn’t understand why God let things happen, but he trusted Him.

Hometown Hero's Redemption by Jill Kemerer
Another great story by Jill Kemerer. Hometown Hero’s Redemption is about the choices we make, choices that are made for you, and what you do about them. I laughed, I cried. I determined to do better. This book is more than just an inspirational romance. It goes to the heart of the matter, pulling out feelings, experiences, and relationships, to make the story real to life.
Lauren experienced a traumatizing childhood of drug abuse and foster homes. Her career as a social worker makes her the perfect candidate to babysit Drew’s best friend’s son, whose father is in jail, while he works at the fire station. If Drew finds out about her last case, will he think she’s as inept as she feels? Can Drew convince her he’s not the same person she knew in high school?
Hometown Hero’s Redemption is a great read. From Drew being the high school football quarterback to getting kicked off the college football team, to Lauren’s childhood and career as a social worker, this story digs deep but delivers a more than satisfactory ending. Readers who enjoy an inspirational romance with a slice of real life will love this story.

Freedom The New Rulebook Christian Suspense Series Book 7 by Joy Ohagwu
I enjoyed this book in the Rulebook series. The suspense continues. Robert and Ruby, Charlie, Pete, all your favorite characters are back again. You’ll need to read the other books in the series to follow what’s happened. These characters have become like friends. I get caught up in the events and don’t want to stop reading. Their faith and trust in God amidst what’s happening in their lives is encouraging.
What is freedom? Freedom allows you to show people the real you, freedom to see past your own pain to someone else’s.
I can’t wait to read the next installment in The New Rulebook series. If you enjoy inspirational suspense, you’ll love this series.

A Temporary Family by Sherri Shackelford
I loved this story, A Temporary Family, by Sherri Shackelford. Both main characters, Tilly Hargreaves and Nolan West, are trying to figure out who they are and what they want. I could connect with both characters, and the danger they find themselves in pulled me into the story.
Tilly has always been perceived as flighty and irresponsible. But what happens when she is solely responsible for her 3 young nieces against outlaws?
Nolan fought in the war and was captured. He’s content to live on his own at a stagecoach station in the middle of nowhere. He’s put routines in place to guarantee order. Can he let go of his past to protect Tilly and her nieces against the outlaws that have set up camp?
I want to be like Tilly, able to really listen, to offer peace to the ones around her. Can she help Nolan control things around him by realizing what he needs by what he says? This paragraph, spoken by Tilly, stuck with me even after I’d finished reading: “We’re both trying to hide the worst parts of ourselves from the rest of the world.” She immediately regretted voicing her words aloud. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I said that. I only meant that you and I both want something uniquely our own.”
If you enjoy inspirational historical fiction, you’ll love this story.

Cash and Whitney were engaged seven years ago. When he decided to move to pursue his dreams, he asked her to go, but she had just started her business. She couldn’t just up and leave. But will her secret destroy the chance they have to rekindle a romance?

Delivered by Joy Ohagwu
Delivered is the sixth book in the The New Rulebook Series by Joy Ohagwu. You do not need to read these in order to understand what is going on. Doing so will give you more background on the characters and what they’ve gone through, but does not take away from the story.
Patricia Kelsey-McKnight is determined to save her town, even though the townspeople don’t like her and won’t believe her. Can Pete Zendel trust his conversion to Jesus is strong enough to keep him from the darkness he used to know? Delivered is action packed and full of suspense. This quote, “Grace gives you the ability to see Christians the way God does,” pulled me into the story. No matter our past, no matter our sin, God will forgive us. It’s hard enough without having to fight what other people think about us.
If you love mystery and suspense, you will love this story!

Final Verdict by Jessica Patch
Can a sheriff and a public defender put their jobs behind them and fall in love? How would it work if he arrested them and she defended them?
Final Verdict is a must read inspirational suspense. Sheriff Beckett keeps his distance from Aurora Daniels as she defends people he thinks would be better off in jail. But as her life is threatened and he must protect her, he puts her safety above his own.
Beckett is out to prove even though he couldn’t keep someone close to him safe in the past, he will do all he can to keep Aurora safe. But will he learn he can rely on God to help him, that he doesn’t have to do it all on his own?
Who is out to kill Aurora? Time races as she and Beckett try to figure out who is after her. But can they keep their hearts from falling for each other?
My favorite quote from the story: “Christians aren’t immune to grief, pain, anger or feelings of revenge. Trust me. If we don’t let God deal with those emotions—if we entertain them—we can end up in a very dark place. At the very least, bitter and cynical.”
I loved the chemistry between these two characters. Final Verdict is a great suspenseful read!

Summer of Deception by Elva Cobb Martin
Rachel needs answers about what happened to her brother. She takes a job as a nanny for Luke’s daughter, where her brother was last seen, but nothing works out as it should.
Luke doesn’t believe her reason for being there. Is her stay at the lovely plantation a ploy to marry into the wealthy family? Why is she really here?
Rachel is determined to stay and do what she was hired to do, whether or not Luke believes her. And in the meantime, she’ll continue to search for answers. Is Luke part of the drug smuggling ring? Is this the ring that took her brother’s life?
I loved this story by Elva Cobb Martin. Luke’s daughter is a joy to get to know. But can Rachel find the answers she’s looking for and not lose her heart to Luke? Summer of Deception is an action filled inspirational romance. I loved Luke as the hero. I couldn’t stop reading. His issues with God and why he stopped praying felt very real. His walk back to God pulled me into the story. I pulled for Rachel and Luke all through the story, but things would keep happening that kept them apart. Loved this story and can’t wait to read more by this author.

Spring Raine by Delia Latham
Ever since I saw this book was coming, I wanted to read it. I was not disappointed. Delia Latham has a way with words that draws you into the story and the characters’ lives. Paradise Pines Lodge is a great place to be. I didn’t want to leave.
Raine is vacationing with Miss Angie in her upstairs apartment and has a run-in with Declan, a neighbor. Miss Angie senses things. How can she know what she knows? Declan is asked to watch over Raine without her knowing, but after showing off his town to her, can he keep his heart to himself? Can he convince her to stay after her vacation is up? Or will she return to her parents and the job that’s waiting for her?
Raine is shown in many ways that God is thinking about her. Do you see those signs in your own life? It’s the little things. A touch of a butterfly. A group of trees. The way sunlight glints through the clouds. Spring Raine fills you with hope and God’s love.
But what happens when she finds her calling in Paradise Pines? Will she stay and disappoint her parents? Or leave her calling behind? How can we know what God wants us to do? Spring Raine-God will lead the way.

Architecture of Survival: Holocaust Diaries by Israel Stein
I am fascinated by accounts of the Holocaust and was looking forward to reading Architecture of Survival. Israel Stein gives his first person account of what he went through during the Holocaust as a child in one section. His parents Paula Stein and Meir Stein wrote in diaries during their time and those have been translated and provided in other sections. The pictures and other information included in the memoir make this account a definite must read of the Holocaust.
I like the cover depicting Israel’s family and the countryside. The formatting is perfect. There were no issues in reading this on a Kindle. Grammar, editing issues: the story was adequately edited. There were no glaring typos or unclear sentences. Translation of the language sometimes threw off the flow of words, but not to the point where you couldn’t understand it. His mother spoke Polish and his dad German.
From the memoir, while in Russia, family and neighbors would go missing and never come back. Israel and his family were then taken away to the Lukishki prison. They escaped being sent further on because his mother was an architect. The rest of the memoir is Israel, his mother’s, and then his father’s recollections of that time period.
The author brings to life the ongoing struggles to stay alive and not be caught. I felt like I was there, hiding from the police, afraid for my life. Escaping to Bialystok, Israel and his family experienced a paradise of sorts, until he was intentionally separated from his family and hiding in a small space of a Polish family. Architecture of Survival is Israel Stein’s recollection of the holocaust and I recommend this memoir to all who are interested in this time period of history. At times graphic, at times very sad, at times incomprehensible, this memoir will touch your heart.

A Family to Call Ours by Merrillee Whren
I loved this story by Merrillee Whren. This is Book 3 of the Front Porch Promises series, but you can read this one without having read the others. Tara Madsen is a widow with a young daughter Hailey who is fighting cancer. Caleb Fitzpatrick comes back to town to find his parents have hired Tara as their receptionist. Is she really who she seems, or does she have ulterior motives? Have his parents trusted the wrong person again? Caleb is still reeling from the actions of his ex, the last person his parents tried to help. Is Tara just like her or can she be trusted?
Tara had fallen in love at a young age, but since he’d died and left her with debt, she couldn’t trust another man to fall in love with. Plus she has a daughter to watch out for now, better than her parents had cared for her. They’d left her at her grandparents and she hadn’t seen them since. She wouldn’t do the same to her daughter.
Can Caleb and Tara learn to lean on God and not worry? In the midst of someone accusing Tara of not being a good mother and Tara’s mother coming back to see her, can Tara trust Caleb? Can Caleb trust Tara not to leave with his heart? What must he do to convince her of his love for her and her daughter?
I recommend this story to anyone who loves a great inspirational romance. I enjoyed the characters and their stories. It’s hard to trust God when things aren’t going well. But as Tara and Caleb find out, trusting Him in the hard times brings peace in the midst of trouble.
I received a free copy in the hope that I would mention/review it on my blog. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
