Embracing the Race 40 Devotions for the Runner's Soul by Lisa Preuett

I love these devotions by Lisa Preuett. Each one has a title relating to running a race and running God's race with a relevant scripture. She talks about pacing, equipment, timing, and injuries, among many other topics. Each devotion can be read in one sitting. At the end of each devotion are three action items. Ready?-a question about the devotion you just read that relates to your personal race, Get Set.-a scripture, and Go!-a prayer to pray to help, encourage, etc relating to the devotion and scripture.

This is a great personal devotion to give you a closer walk with God. Whether you run or not, you'll enjoy these devotions as a time to get to know God and yourself.

Chasing the Powhatan Arrow by Michael Abraham

Michael Abraham’s latest nonfiction book, Chasing the Powhatan Arrow, takes you on a journey following the rails of the Powhatan Arrow. From Virginia, to West Virginia, to Ohio, Abraham stops at several locations along the line to talk with people about their area and what they remember from the passenger service line.

From Norfolk to Cincinnati, Abraham brings to life the stories of the railroad. How Claytor Lake was named, the story of Mary Ingles Draper, among others, Abraham takes you inside the lives of the people who lived along this route. Interspersed with the history of the Norfolk Southern line, the economic and geographic changes, and the personal histories of places along the line, Chasing the Powhatan Arrow immerses you in a time gone by.

As with Abraham’s other nonfiction books, the stories will draw you in, placing you in the midst of the towns, the locations, the people’s lives as they tell their stories. Climb aboard and start your own journey, Chasing the Powhatan.

The Baron's Blunder by Susan Baganz

The Baron’s Blunder is the novella prequel to the Rose Hill Regency Romances. I loved this story! The Baron, Charles Percy, saves Lady Henrietta Allendale and her aunt from a ruffian. He spends his time escaping the clutches of women determined to capture a wealthy gentleman. But what is it about Henrietta that draws him?

Henrietta Allendale has no desire to wed as well. But when she and Charles are caught together and must wed, will they find they have more in common than they thought? The verbal sparring between Charles Percy and Henrietta is delightful and kept me turning the pages. I never knew what they were going to say next.

To find a love most true, base it on God’s word. Can Charles prove his love to Henrietta? Is Charles the one God has chosen for her? This is a must read Christian regency romance. You won’t be disappointed. A wonderful start to a great series.

Unbound Hope by Joy Ohagwu

Unbound Hope, another great story by Joy Ohagwu, is the second in the Pleasant Hearts Christian suspense series. The characters draw you into the story. The suspense keeps you turning the pages. Erica Heart, flight attendant, is fighting her past, literally. When Erica’s past becomes her present, she can trust no one but God. Can Jim earn her trust and love?

Jim Denison, a US Marshall, has set his sights on Erica, but she is holding him at arm’s length. Can he win her heart? He feels God is moving in a different direction, but will it line up with what is happening in Erica’s life?

To follow the characters’ stories, it is better to read the stories in order, but not necessary to follow this story. This is a great suspense, a story about God’s love and faithfulness, and how to follow what God has planned for our lives, even when we can’t see where He’s leading.

Bride by Arrangement by Karen Kirst

I loved this story by Karen Kirst. The third story in the Cowboy Creek stories, this is Noah Burgess' story. Will and Daniel, Noah's friends, surprise him with a mail-order bride. They found love and happiness and want him to have the same experience, even though he is perfectly content alone. He feels his physical scars and the ones nobody can see have damaged him too much to find love. But he's never met someone as determined as Grace.

Grace Longstreet needs to get away from Chicago with her two little girls. Her husband has died and her brother-in-law is making unwanted advances and threatening her. She plans it with her cousin to go in her place and marry Noah.

Can Grace convince Noah to marry her even though she has lied about who she is and he doesn't want a wife? Will Noah realize he has fallen in love with Grace before he forces her to leave or marry someone else? Between figuring out who has forged the deeds, poisoned the cattle, and deterred the town's growth, the action keeps you turning the page. The romance between Grace and Noah will make you think about this story long after you finish the last page.

There Will Be Stars by Billy Coffey

Ever had one of those days where you feel like you've done this before? Seems like life is like that. Most days are just doing the same thing over and over, never getting different results. But what happens when one day you have the courage to do something out of routine?

Billy Coffey has done it again. This novel pulled me in from the first page. In Mattingly VA, a group of people are reliving their last day in an endless cycle. What happens when you go through life not making changes, not striving to be better? You end up like Bobby Barnes, Dorothea, Tommy, George, Laura Beth, Junior, and Juliet. Take a journey with seven people who form a family of sorts where time isn't what it seems. What if you had a second chance to make things right? Would you take it? This book caused me to stop and think about how my life affects someone else. Each person is interconnected, part of a community. Coffey's books can be read in any order.

A haunting tale of love, hope, addiction, and betrayal. Special Delivery Baby by Sherri Shackelford

I loved this story by Sherri Shackelford. Will Canfield and Tomasina Stone are perfect for each other, once they work through some things, like Texas Tom being a drover, and Will wanting to go into politics. With an abandoned baby in the mix, I couldn't stop reading.

Will Canfield, Noah Burgess, and Daniel Gardner found Cowboy Creek after they get out of the war. Tomasina drives a herd of cattle into Cowboy Creek. Her pa had died on the trail. Will finds an abandoned baby outside his door. The Murdoch gang instigating trouble, Will having rules in town he expects to be obeyed, and Texas Tom out to break every one of them, and abandoned baby had me laughing, crying, and cheering for the characters. I felt like I was living in this town and these were my neighbors.

Tomasina wants her past back, her life as a drover and her pa in charge. Will is looking to the future. Cowboy Creek would be the county seat and he the governor. Can Will and Tomasina come to terms on what they want out of life? Sometimes what we want most out of life isn't really what we need. This is a story you don't want to miss.

Blind-sided by God Disappointment, Suffering, and the Untamable Goodness of God by Peter Chin

Finding God's goodness in the midst of suffering. Can it be found? Or has God turned His back on you? Follow Peter Chin's journey as he follows what God has told him to do, but along the way he isn't protected from suffering. From a miscarriage, to a home break-in, to breast cancer, to termination of their health insurance, I'm sure Peter felt like Job, that God had abandoned him. But Peter found along the way, that God hadn't deserted him. He was still there. God doesn't move. We do. When we lack strength to go through things, God is right there helping us.

Blind-sided by God is Peter's story of falling in love with his wife, falling in love with God, and how to overcome when life attacks you. Along the way you will get to know Peter and his family, but you will also find God is still there in the midst of pain, hardship, disappointment, ultimate suffering, no matter what you are going through. Peter sums it up with this quote: "We are children who live in a loving and safe home but pout most wretchedly because our parents always give us what we need, and only sometimes what we want. And this is the reason that in times of trial, we are so quick to lose faith in God's love for us-we forget that his love is exhibited most clearly not through our own pleasure, but through Jesus' pain." Jesus suffered for us. He died for us. So that we might experience His love for us, regardless of what we go through.

If you are suffering through something, find someone who has gone through the same things. Band together. You are never alone. There has always been someone who has walked before you. Choose to praise God even in the midst of your suffering. God is still there. He hasn't abandoned you. He didn't stop loving you. Hold on to that. Make a choice every day to step out in faith and serve God. Remember, as Chin notes, you can count on God being right beside you in the midst of your suffering, even redeeming the most seemingly irredeemable moments.

Face to Face by Misty Wallace & Keith Blackburn with Kirk Blackard

A powerful story of redemption and forgiveness. This is the true account of Misty Wallace and the night Keith Blackburn shot her and left her for dead. Misty and Keith take turns giving their accounts of the events leading up to that night and what happened after, and how they were affected by the chain of circumstances. Their story will make you pause, laugh, cry, and wonder about the power of forgiveness and how it changes lives.

Can a victim of violence and the perpetrator find forgiveness? Face to Face examines Misty's experiences as the victim of a violent attack and what the perpetrator goes through, from being arrested, to spending time in jail, to getting released, and learning how to live again, to sharing their stories for others to see how forgiveness doesn't just affect the one forgiving, but also the one who has been forgiven.

This quote from the book captures the tone of the book: "I tried to put the bullet back in the gun. When Misty forgave me I realized I couldn't fix the past. I had to work toward changing the future. When we change our minds and thinking, we change our future." Face to Face-what happens when Misty and Keith come face to face with the night that changed their lives.

Uncommon Ground by Joy Ohagwu

Another great story by Joy Ohagwu! Stella Heart sees firsthand how God can move even when you're going through something and you don't know why or see no way out. God is already there.

Michael Huddleston doesn't understand God's ways, but knows He sees and watches out for us in spite of ourselves.

Putting God first, they see God move in unexpected ways. Uncommon Ground is a suspenseful Christian romance that will keep your finger on the edge of the page, turning to see what happens next.

Want Ad Wedding by Cheryl St. John

Daniel Gardner, Will Canfield, and Noah Burgess built Cowboy Creek. The town needed brides so they placed an ad for brides to come to their town. One of the brides, Mrs. Swann, is known by the three men. They grew up together, only back then, she was more interested in safety and security than love. Has she changed, or does she still want the same things? Why is she here? What happened to her? Why is she on the bride train? They'd lost touch when she'd married the officer she'd chosen and moved on.

Life hadn't turned out as Leah'd planned and now she is living in a small town called Cowboy Creek. It was time to start over, to get a fresh start away from everything and everyone she'd known. Until she ran into the two men she'd grown up with, Will and Daniel. Why were they reconnected now? What were they doing way out here in Cowboy Creek? Did God direct her here to find Daniel? Was he the guy for her and she hadn't known it when they were younger? She was looking for home and security. Could she find that here in Cowboy Creek? She felt she didn't have any other choice than to be a mail-order bride, but maybe God was giving her a second chance. She had no where else to go. Cowboy Creek was her and her baby's new home.

Daniel doesn't want Leah to marry just anyone. He has to watch over her. He decides to ask her to marry him to keep her safe. But will he find all that he's looking for? Or will her history with Will come between them?

Echoes Beyond a memoir by Patsy Greenway and Christine Saunders

This is Christine and Pasty's recollection of growing up on Black Top Mountain in Virginia. It's based on a true story of their mother. From the moment Clara Bell Arnold met Patton Compton I couldn't put the book down. This book will take you back to a different time, growing up in the 1940s-60s in southwest Virginia. In fourteen years, Clara and Patton had twelve children. Echoes Beyond is a compilation of memories, what life was like on Black Top Mountain, from walking 2 miles to get to the bus stop, finding edible plants, sharing chores, and through it all, Clara's vision and faith in Jesus. Nothing was wasted, everything had a use. From daily struggles, to bullying, to adventures outside, Pasty and Christine portray a way of life not forgotten. No indoor plumbing, no electricity, children playing outside, close accidents that could have been deadly, all tell the tale of the hardships, the desperation of living on Blacktop Mountain.

Does Clara finally get away from the Mountain? Does she make a better life for herself and her children? I was drawn in by their memories, the kids at school making fun of them, the ones who would share food, the neighbors that would pitch in to help. The sight of the discarded sweet potato will stay with me. All of Christine's frustrations, anger, disappointments, are culminated in throwing that sweet potato as far as she could. You will laugh, cry, shudder, at the children's escapades as they entertain themselves in nature, not realizing the full danger, and live life the only way they know how. They didn't see how others lived, they only knew what they saw and they made the best of it. From tying a string to a June bug's leg to pitching cow patties to taking down a wasp nest, the children were never bored.

This is the story of a courageous, faith-filled woman and her family's struggle to live in southwest Virginia during a time of hardship and poverty, filled with love and hope for the future.

Touches of Time by LoRee Peery

This is another great story by LoRee Peery. A cold case, a search for God, and a new life soon to be born. From an old journal to tracking down leads, Touches of Time follows the journey of a 35-year-old unsolved case.

Ford Melcher is a cold-case investigator. The case he is working on may coincide with the truth Sarah is searching for. Can he help bring resolution to her soul as well as to her family? Will his feelings for Sarah end when he solves the case, or do his feelings go deeper than that?

Sarah Bishop is a mother-to-be searching for God and who killed her grandfather. While investigating the cold facts surrounding her grandfather’s murder 35 years ago, she just might unleash her doubts regarding a God who loves and cares for her, and bring old feelings to the surface putting her life in danger.

Can Ford keep Sarah safe while he investigates? Once Sarah realizes Ford held back important information, will she allow him to remain in her life with her unborn child? Will she find God's place in her life?

I enjoyed reading the journal entries and following the cold-case investigation from beginning to end. If you love a romantic suspenseful story, you will love Touches of Time. Walk through time with Sarah and Ford and see if you can figure out who killed her grandfather.

Island Hope by Kimberly Rose Johnson

Looking for small-island, big romance love stories? You’ve found the place. The characters become your friends and each story brings the friendships closer. Island Hope is the last book in the Wildflower B&B Romance series. You do not need to read them in order, but you will want to read them to follow the characters’ stories.

Derrick Trainor is named acting manager of Wildflower Resort and Spa while Piper is on bedrest. He’s still learning to be a single dad to his 15 year old daughter Alyssa, after his wife’s car accident and death four years ago. Allyssa is the typical teenager, beginning to drive and date. Derrick must learn how to juggle working more hours with taking care of his daughter and being there for her.

Hope Michaels is the owner of the electrical company hired to do electrical work for the resort. After being hurt, she is in hiding, from life and herself. She doesn’t let anyone get too close. When Piper dictates that Derrick oversee her work while she is out, she is livid, but then she finds out why Piper insists on it.

Can Derrick and Hope work together without stepping on each other’s toes? When Derrick has a problem with Alyssa can he turn to Hope for help? Can they work through past hurts to find a future together?

Derrick’s life is run by fear, fear of something happening to his daughter, fear of what he can’t control. Hope’s life was changed when someone close to her hurt her. She is afraid to let anyone close again. When Derrick accuses her and then pushes her out of his life, she doesn’t see how she can trust him. Can they learn to trust God with their hearts, hopes, and fears?
Island Hope is the perfect read. I read it straight through. From Derrick and Hope to the other characters, you get drawn into the story and can’t put it down.

What Will We Do With God's Love?

John 13:35 "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? As you go about your day, show some people some love. But what about those days when you are worried about paying your own bills, or stressed out over something that happened with a friend or family member, or you or someone close to you has been diagnosed with an illness? Then, it is harder to keep our eyes on God and follow His lead. We're like Peter when he stepped out of the boat and walked on the water. He was fine until he started looking around him, then he started sinking. It's the same in our lives. When everything is going great, we may even forget God is there.

I'm doing this Bible study, "Becoming More Than a Good Bible Study Girl by Lysa Terkeurst. This verse stopped me in my tracks and each time throughout the study when it talked about God's love, I had to pause and think about it. If we love one another, everyone will know that we are His disciple. Have you ever thought about why that is? Is there love around you? In high school when you don't quite fit in, do you feel love? Or do you feel like you don't matter, you aren't part of the in-crowd, nobody listens to what you have to say? When you come into contact with others, do you make a point of making people feel welcome, feel loved, or do you just shrug your shoulders and say oh well, I've been there, why should I step out of my comfort zone to be a friend? This study put a pang in my heart. I've experienced these things. It's made me more aware of the people around me. Shouldn't I use what God has given me and use it to share His love?

Many people feel unloved, unwanted, discouraged, let down, disheartened, have a fear of being unwanted or unaccepted. But you know what? That's not God's way. God is love. His commandments: Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied:‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” As Jesus' disciples, we must show love. There shouldn't be people feeling this way. We should be showing love toward one another that everyone feels accepted, wanted, loved, like they fit in. No one person is better than another. We should all pitch in and help each other. When you see one fall, reach down and help. Don't trample them while they're down. Be there for them, reach out in love, don't envy what someone else has. Be content with what you have, with who you are, continually striving to run the race God has set before you.

1 John 4:11-12 "Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us." If we are known to be disciples of Christ by our love, but so many people feel this level of despair, we are failing. I'm failing. I can use my insecurities, inadequacies, and dorkiness to reach out to others, but when the "others" don't react in the right way, it causes me to shut down and go back in my shell. I need to realize it's all about God, not my personal feelings. I love because He loved, not for what I'll get out of it, whether it's a friend, a conversation, or making someone else feel better. I show them God's love and He takes care of the rest. When God calls us to do something, we should step out in faith and do what He says. God will reward our faithfulness. What the other person does is on them. You can't withhold doing what God's said because you set up scenarios of what the other person might do. You are responsible for you and doing what God has told you to do. You can't worry or control what the other person does.

We are known whose we are by our love for one another. If love directed everything we said and did, there would be no problem with gossiping, or saying hurtful things. Do you know what love does? Love binds us together. Love makes us stronger. God's love changes things, changes us, and changes those around us. With God's love we encourage each other, lift each other up, pray for each other. We wouldn't be putting each other down, or talking about someone behind their backs. We would be ruled by God's love in our hearts. I want to be saturated with God's authentic love--that would transform me and everyone around me. If we love with God's love, it makes everything better.

I want to put this into practice and see how far my sphere of influence reaches. Which isn't my sphere, but God's sphere. With God's love directing our paths, we will reach the ones who need to feel love, those that have been hurt, we will be sensitive to their needs because with God's love in us His Spirit knows what they need and can work through us to touch them.

God lays people on my heart to pray for and I'm seeking Him to know how to pray for them. Our pastor has opened up my eyes during praise and worship at church. I'm able to spend time during the week and in church services, with my eyes and heart on God, worshipping Him and praying and seeking. I have felt such a difference in my life. The more you read the Bible, the more you want to. The more you pray, the more you want to. When you are filled with God's truth, you are looking to Him and not at what is going on around you. You are listening to His words, His commands, not what others have to say. Our trust, hope, and faith are in Him. Like Peter stepping out of the boat, as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus he walked on water. But as soon as he started looking around, he sank. When we keep our eyes on God loving other people is easy. We aren't worried or stressed over what's happening in our lives. Our focus is on Him and what He's doing. And that gives Him reign to work through us.

How will you step out and show God's love to others?

The Bridesmaid's Hero: A Snowgum Creek Novella by Narelle Atkins

I loved this novella by Narelle Atkins. It comes right after Falling for the Farmer in the Snowgum Creek series, but can be read as a standalone. A sigh-worthy hero sweet romance for an afternoon read.

Harry Westmore has several odd jobs, one of which is to drive the bridesmaids to the wedding. He and Serena hit it off after just meeting. But he's only interested in a holiday romance, isn't he? He thinks because of their financial gap, he isn't good enough for her.

He's from the country, loves horses. She lives in the city in an apartment. His dad ran off and left him and his mom struggling. He can't be in a relationship and not be able to provide for his wife. Can she look past his income and see the person he is? Devotional: Joseph and His Dreams

Genesis 37:18-33

19 They said to each other, “Look, here comes that master dreamer! 20 Let’s kill him, throw him into one of the cisterns, and say that a wild animal has eaten him. Then we’ll see what happens to his dreams.”

Joseph had dreams that showed others bowing down to him, which made his brothers jealous. They didn’t like the fact that the dreams showed Joseph greater than they were. Aren’t we the same way? We don’t want to feel someone is above us. But isn’t that what submission is all about? The brothers didn’t want to be in submission to Joseph. They were older, wiser, knew more.
Joseph’s brothers are tending sheep away from home. His father sends Joseph to check on his brothers. His brothers see him coming, so they plot among themselves to kill him. His brother, Rueben, doesn’t want to go along with them. He plans to rescue Joseph without his brothers knowing. Unknown to him, the other brothers sell Joseph into slavery before he can rescue him. Joseph is gone.
The brothers dipped Joseph’s robe in animal blood to fool their father into thinking Joseph was dead. Have you ever tried to cover up something you did that was wrong? How did that work out? Here, not so well.

A few years go by and Egypt is in a drought. There is no food, but because of Joseph’s dreams, he convinced Pharaoh to store food and prepare. Joseph is in bondage, but God is still near. He still has dreams. Isn’t it good to know when things aren’t going as we think they should, that God is still near? We can still call on Him and He will answer.

Joseph recognized his brothers when they came to Egypt for food. Joseph gave orders to bring his youngest brother to Egypt. Instead of telling them right off who he was, he sets them up, demands they bring his youngest brother. He has the Pharaoh’s ear at this time. He could have retaliated against them for what they had done to him. But he didn’t.

They enjoyed a feast together where Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers. But you know what his brothers didn’t realize? God used them to make Joseph’s dreams come true. If he hadn’t had the dreams that made them jealous to begin with, if they hadn’t seen him coming, if they hadn’t plotted to kill him, if they hadn’t sold him into slavery, Egypt wouldn’t have been prepared for the famine, and Joseph wouldn’t have had the position he held. Isn’t it great the way God works?

Romans 8:28 We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God-those whom he has called according to his plan.

Even when it seems everything is against you, God is still on your side. He uses situations and circumstances for your good. Even when others do things against you, talk about you, they can’t stop the good God has planned for your life. Just like Joseph.

Salsa and Speed Bumps by Susan Baganz

Great story by Susan Baganz! This is the second book in the series, but you do not need to read them in order, other than to get to know the characters. Stephanie Simson works at DeLucia’s. She’s pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child even though she said no. Can she ever trust a guy again? She feels so alone.

Roberto Rodriquez has Christian parents who adopted him and he wants to help others b/c of the gift he was given by his birth mother. He is an attorney and is asked to join Every Child a Home organization.

Roberto lets God lead his every move. Can Stephanie have a relationship like that with God? She’s not who she used to be since accepting Jesus as her Savior, but she still has to deal with the consequences of what happened before. God doesn’t make that go away, but He helps you through your choices as you trust in Him. Some sin you can see, some you can’t, but all suffer the consequences. Can Stephanie trust Roberto or will he be like her ex-boyfriend and force himself on her? Why is God bringing a new man into her life now? How can she know God is talking to her?

Robbie wants someone who shares his faith. Is that person Stephanie? Will she accept him for the person he is today, or will she hold his past against him? Will Every Child a Home believe him when he’s accused of immoral behavior? In the midst of trials and temptations, Robbie and Stephanie must stand firm in their faith.

From date rape to drug addiction to stalking to ties with the mafia and sex trafficking, this book has it all. This resonated with me while reading this book: Everything I need to fulfill my life is right here in God. We find it hard to forgive ourselves. Can Stephanie forgive her past to have a future with Robbie? Pick up this great book to see!

Rocky Mountain Reunion by Tina Radcliffe

This is another great book by Tina Radcliffe!

Anne Matson is a nurse who left her past in the past. Her aunt dictated her steps and Anne followed along. Her husband from 10 years ago comes to town and everything is off balance. What will she do now that her past is back and he has a daughter with him? Will her aunt stand in the way again?

Matthew Clark married Anne 10 years ago. Her aunt stepped in and had it annulled. When his development company wins a bid in Anne's hometown, and his daughter needs care Anne can provide, can he stand up to the aunt who ended his future before it even began? Can he convince Anne to give it another try?

This verse in the book, "Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart all ye that hope in the Lord.", really spoke to me. No matter what's going on, no matter what you're going through, if your hope is in the Lord, everything will work out. Just put your faith and hope in God. Will Anne and Matthew depend on God to help them work through their fears and doubts? What happens when Anne finds out why Matt is in town? This book has it all, love, romance, inspiration, and courage to let go of the past to have a future designed by God. You won't be able to put this book down.
