More Than Words by Judith Miller. Meet Gretchen Kohler, a young woman living in the Amana Colonies in 1885. Gretchen lives with her widowed father, younger brother, and senile grandmother. Gretchen dreams of becoming a writer, but the elders do not condone the practice. Secretly, she keeps a journal that holds stories of her life in the colony and her poems. Gretchen's beliefs are challenged as she cares for her grandmother, befriends a band of gypsies, forms a friendship with a young man, an outsider, who is interested in more than just her writings, and misunderstandings with her childhood love and future husband. This book led to research of the Amana Colonies, a society similar to the Amish. An enjoyable read.
